Your New Year’s Eve tour starts with a visit to Shifen Old Street. The street is lined with souvenir shops, sky lantern shops and eateries. As it is adjacent to the railway, the unique view of the train heading through the street always attracts a lot of rail fans and photographers to capture the remarkable moment. Other than that, you can see a lot of people set up their sky lanterns on the railway track, getting ready to release them into the sky.

Sky Lantern release in Taiwan originates from Shifen, and it used to be a tradition for the villagers to signal the others after the threat of the bandits had passed. Nowadays, the lanterns are used as the symbols of peace and good fortune. Since you are in Shifen, you will not miss this opportunity to experience the tradition of flying a sky lantern. 3 or 4 people will share one lantern, and each of you can write down your wishes on one side of the lantern. Your tour guide will teach you how to release a sky lantern correctly, so you can fully enjoy the tranquil and peaceful moment.

The next stop is Jiufen Old Street. The small hill village of Jiufen was flourished in the 1940s due to the gold mining industry, and then fell into disrepair and decrepitude for years. The power of cinema preserved it from being forgotten.

The success of the awarded movie “A City of Sadness” and the Japanese animated movie “Spirited Away” brought vitality to Jiufen’s tourism, making Jiufen the most popular destination in northeastern Taiwan.

Since you are in Jiufen, it’s recommended to have a cup of tea at a teahouse, where you can appreciate the picturesque scenery, and the freshly brewed tea at the same time. Besides the teahouses, here you can also tastes various local foods and buy souvenirs. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the traditional Jiufen dessert—Taro Ball.

When the night falls, the red lanterns strung up along the street are lit up, making Jiufen more beautiful the later it is. Walking along Jiufen Old Street, as if you walk into the fantastic scenes of the Japanese animated film, “Spirited Away”.

On the way back to the downtown, you will stop by the Remains of the 13 Levels in Jinguashi, a former copper smelter, which was built in 1933 when the Japanese people discovered and started the copper mining here. It is a significant proof of the history of Jinguashi’s copper mining industry, and an iconic landmark of the northeastern area.
Every night, the Remains of the 13 Levels is illuminated by amber lights from 18:00 to 21:00. From a distance, the building looks just like an abandoned palace, making it a popular spot for many dramas and advertisements shooting.

When you reach the downtown, you will have some free time to explore Xinyi Shopping District yourself, the busiest shopping area in Taiwan. A number of department stores, malls and high-end restaurants are located in this area. Since you are there, it’s impossible to miss Taipei 101. This shining skyscraper was once the tallest building in the world that reaches a height of 508 meters, towering over the skyline of Taipei. It is also the launch pad of the spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks.

Finally, it’s time for the much anticipated New Year’s Eve fireworks. Before the fireworks display starts, you will have a late night supper at LE BLE D’OR in Eslite Xinyi Store, where you can enjoy magnificent views of Taipei 101 New Year’s Eve fireworks display at the outdoor area.

The restaurant is located on the basement floor. Around 23:40, your tour guide will lead you to the ground floor’s outdoor area, where you will get great views of the bright and colorful fireworks while counting down to welcome the year of 2024.

Your tour will end at Eslite Xinyi Store at 01:00, after that, you need to make your own way back to your hotel. Due to the traffic control, it is suggested to take MRT.
